Chapter 7

Ivan Ilyich was constantly aware of his pain and in the third month of his illness he sensed the feelings of others waiting for his death, giving peace to himself and others. He slept less in spite of the heavy doses of opium and morphine, which seemed useless. He was given prescribed food, but had no appetite and ate very little. Even his bowel movements were aided by a pleasant servant, Gerasim. Ivan pitied him for performing such tedious tasks. Being very weak, Ivan asked for help from him repeatedly. Gerasim was not only good natured and helpful, but cheerful.

Ivan did not like the fact that everybody thought he was just sick and would get better with proper medication; he was going to die and only Gerasim understood him and made no effort to pretend the illness was something it was not. Thus, Ivan appreciated his company even more.

He wanted to be pampered, caressed, to cry. Unfortunately, nobody actually realized this and he did not get the support or love he desired; nor did he express himself as such. His last days were torturous because of the lies surrounding him.
